For all the cliche of science fiction being primarily a "boy's club", we have a brilliant woman to thank for arguably one of the very first novels of the genre (as well as the horror genre at the same time!) Frankenstein, published by Mary Wollstonecrest Shelly in 1818 is the modernisation of the prometheus myth through the deeds of a scientist seeking too much knowledge and control of the natural world. How fitting that we celebrate the genius creator of this novel (which she wrote at 19 years of age!) on her 209th birthday for Author August 2006!
Given her own literary accomplishments and her marriage to famed radical poet Percy Shelley, there is obviously no shortage of information to be found about this remarkable woman on the world wide web.
