Tell us about your RPG |

Several of us participate in a variety of Role-Play Games. I would love to hear about your games, how they run, if there are fees involved and what a new player can expect when they start out. What makes you like the game?

Great topic idea. Obviously I have a lot to say about the joys of SPI's Universe, as well as the Terran Fringe play by e-mail campaign for it, and I promise I will soon. Tonight though, I need to get to sleep soon.

Ok I play in three different games.
The Terran Fringe my very first RPG game is played through a yahoo group. You can get game information here: games.groups.yahoo.com/gr...ranfringe/ It being my first, it will always have a very special place in my heart. There are many rules and regulations to follow and lots of crossing your fingers to hope you get a good roll. I was drawn to the creative writing and the talented writers. Working together to tell our story was new to me, and I loved it. The number of players in the game is limited, so you must get game master approval to join. LJim is our GM and he makes the game a lot of fun and very interesting. Feel free to stop in and read about the adventures. My character there is Saylor Bleu. She is a lot of fun. If I had her to create over again, I would do things a bit differently just to give her a better chance at making some of her rolls. But, being new I hadnt made that connection yet. So instead I have fun trying to keep a nice character from getting too upset when things go wrong around her which seems to happen a lot the poor girl. Oh well she is mine and I love her. My next game was Littlefish. It is set up and played almost exactly like the Terran Fringe. You can learn about that game here: games.groups.yahoo.com/group/littlefish/ Many of the players from Terran Fringe play in Littlefish. In fact, I stepped in to fill the role of an existing character, Miles. That has been quite a challenge but I have enjoyed it. As I became a RPG Junkie I looked for more games for my fix. I found my next RPG - USI - and again fell in love. While the previous games are very rule based, USI is a free form game where there are rules but they are more open to player interpretation. You can learn more about USI here: www.usi-rpg.com/cina/home.shtml I play several characters there. But, my main two characters are SubCommander Serenity Jurre-Selaht and Captain Teague Vates. I have a great time with both of them and if you go to the site, you can look at their bios. So there are three games that keep me hopping. I love them and hope that you have the opportunity to check them out some time.

Not to get overly technical, but it should be noted that The Terran Fringe is not a "game", but a campaign for SPI Universe (same of Littlefish as well. As a GM I make rules decisions, but I mostly follow the rules of the excellent 1981 RPG Universe created for pen and paper play by SPI back when the internet was just something a few military geeks were getting their thrills with in private. It's ironic how well Universe works as a system for PBeM, actually better than I suspect it did as a tabletop affair.

Thanks for the clarification there, LJim.

Something you could understandably lose track of playing so much USI, since it is both a game and a campaign. This is the most common trend even in tabletop RPGs these days - usually the game comes with a setting and a system all it's own. That wasn't so much the case in the old days of Traveller and Universe and the like. Those games did have a bit of setting (Traveller had quite a bit over the many years it was around), but it was always open ended enough to let the GM majorly flesh it out, or even reject it and create his/her own.

I used to play Guild Wars but I'm an old guy and I ended up getting tired of the kid's gabbering. They would get frustrated with me because I was an
infrequent player, acually had to work for a living, and I hadn't memorized all of the rules or tricks. I also wasn't up on all of the language short
cuts. In any case I stopped playing though I think it is a well done game.
I'm back to playing games on my own computer. Mount and Blade is my favorite right now. I love the idea of free movement and no storyline. You decide what challenges to take on and how you want your character to progress. If there is no storyline you may play the game as long as you like without having to start over or return to a saved game. The medieval combat on horse back is the best that I've seen and the lay out of the villages, towns, and castles can serve to educate young people about the Middle Ages.

I think the number of people playing the PvE side of Guild Wars has tended to decline, so that getting an all-player party for a mission, or one of
the elite missions I used to enjoy like Urgoz's Warren or Slaver's Exile, would now be awfully difficult.

I thought I was the only one who knew what Universe was--I bought it for 99 cents when I was still in grade school (over two decades ago). There's an
actual campaign played online? Do space battles get settled with the DeltaVee board game? I'm extremely curious as to how you actually go about playing
such a thing through e-mail or a message board.

My campaign is dead now because (as tragically always happens with RPGs) real life got too busy. We played for three years and many email posts however. We
never really got into any space combat, but I probably wouldn't have used Delta Vee as it would have been way too cumbersome (unless somebody were crazy
enough to automate it online, which given that somebody did character generation, wouldn't be entirely impossible someday...) Just playing out a couple
planet encounters and basic space launches kept us busy for those three years of near nightly posting!
I think the links above still work though, and you can read all the old posts, and see it played for real. It was fun. |
