For the alleged conspiracy to remain a secret after all these years, NASA would have to design it so the least number of people would be in on it. The larger the number of people who knew about it, the greater the chance that somebody would eventually come forward and reveal the truth.

Let's consider NASA's options. First there's the "Do It The Hard Way" method.

When each Apollo mission was launched, the alleged conspirators would have arrange for the "fake launch" of the crew. That would mean that several hundred technicians would have to either (a) pretend to put the crew into the spacecraft, and then allow the unmanned rocket to be launched, or (b) launch the rocket with the crew inside, then arrange a secret recovery of the command module at some later time (minutes, hours, or days later).

Note: All those launch personnel and recovery personnel would have to be in on the conspiracy.

Whether they used method A or method B, the conspirators then had to deal with the problem of getting the manned command module back into the air a week after the initial launch, so that the recovery team could pick them up when they supposedly return from the Moon. And that would require a second launch of another rocket capable of getting the command module from the launch site to the recover area (it wouldn't have to be a Saturn 5. A smaller rocket would do.)

To do this, the conspirators would need a secret site from which to launch this second manned rocket with the crew inside to be picked up at the recovery site. Now we've got an entire launch crew at the secret site who have to keep their mouths shut about the conspiracy.

They would also need a secret team to design the fake Moon pictures (thousands of them) and the fake Moon videos (hundreds of hours of them) for all the Apollo missions except for Apollo 13.

The total number of people involved in this version of the conspiracy would be in the thousands -- the Canaveral launch crew, the entire Houston Mission Control staff, the secret recovery crew, the secret launch site crew, and the secret photo/video team. And of course, all 21 of the astronauts for the Apollo missions 11 through 17, along with their back-up crews.

If the conspiracy theorists are suggesting that this was how NASA did it, I think we can pretty much assume that these guys as so stupid they couldn't find their asses with both hands. There's no way that thousands of bright young NASA technicians and hundreds of patriotic Naval personnel could keep a secret of this magnitude for decade after decade without a single one of them cracking under the strain and attempting to reveal this insidious plot.

It's obvious that the best way to attempt this conspiracy would be plan it so that the fewest people new about it.

So, here's the "Do It The Easy Way" method.

To insure that the fewest number of people were involved in the conspiracy, NASA would arrange to have all the Apollo crews agree to remain in Earth orbit for the entire time they were supposed to be making their trip to the Moon. That way the astronauts would be the only ones in on the conspiracy. All the ground-based personnel would be fooled by fake telemetry and radio transmissions from the astronauts, along with fake Moon walk pictures.

No wait, they would still need to have a team to create the fake Moon pictures, videos, and telemetry working in a secret location from which they would transmit it to Houston, coordinating their efforts with the astronauts up in Earth orbit.

Bare in mind that the supposedly "fake" Apollo telemetry was received at several NASA locations around the globe (such as the Australian folks who did a better job of preserving their own copies of the "lost" Apollo 11 videos.) And this supposedly fake telemetry was also received by other countries around the world -- including Russia!

Obviously the conspirators had to transmit the fake telemetry up to the orbiting Apollo spacecraft so that they could then transmitting it back to Earth. That would be the only way for the data to be received at various points on Earth, depending on which point was facing the Moon at the right moment.

But wait a second . . . The orbiting Apollo spacecrafts would not necessarily be on the same side of the Earth as the Moon at any given moment. How did the clever conspirators deal with that problem?

Ah, hell . . . you got me there, folks. I haven't figured that part out yet. But as you can see, there's no easy way to make this lunatic conspiracy work (pun intended).
