These are characters from an obscure, little-known sci-fi movie called Forbidden Planet. I'm a sucker for flying saucers, robots, and future-babes in short dresses. This one hit me with a triple punch in 1956, and the wounds just never healed. Drawing eased the pain.
This painting of Adams and Morbius was done from a 35mm slide I took right off the movie screen when Forbidden Planet was shown at an "art house" theater in Atlanta. A group of friends and I took over 300 slides from the movie.
I used a publicity photo of Robby shaking hands with Cooky to paint this one, changing the arm, of course. I've always wished I'd made it a "full body" shot. Robby has the second best set of legs in the movie!
Two of these poses of Warren Stevens were also done from slides taken directly from the movie screen -- and the third one from a slide taken off my TV screen.
The publicity shot I used for the drawing below is so good I think it's just as much a work of art as my humble drawing. In fact, it took me several attempts to get it right. I kept screwing up Altaira's nose. (I really hate it when that happens . . . )

The rest of these are just robots I dreamed up off the top of my head. The first two were done with gel pens in metallic colors. The originals actually look metallic because of the ink!

Fans of 1950s sci-fi will recognize the inspiration for the drawing below on the right (or the last drawing, depending on how your monitor arranges the pictures). It's a version of the alien suits from Earth vs the Fly Saucers. I've always felt those guys needed hands, elbows, and snazzy details that the low budget of that great movie couldn't afford to provide.
