I would like to re-read it as an adult The only things I can really remember about it are that there are these people/soldiers? that can perfectlly judge distances. There is a war going on and these soldiers think they are in the war but in reality they are in a type of suspended animation and are only 'dreaming' their involvement in the war. There is also a group of young kids that are acrobats? One of them can tumble from very tall buildings and land on the ground without injury. I have no idea who the author is or the title. The cover of the book was a pretty typical sci-fi cover. It had a lot of blue in it and buildings with spires maybe. Didn't appear to be an "old' looking book. More modern cover than say an old Asimov book. Any help would be appreciated. I can't seem to get this book out of my brain! It has haunted me since I was a kid. The only way to banish it is to revisit it!! Please Help!! Thanks, Mogdragon

Young protagonists had me checking the details of Ender's War, but that doesn't fit and didn't come out until the eighties anyway, and searching for "ultimate warrior" just got me to a 1975 movie of a post-apocalyptic kind, starring Yul Brynner, once I'd got past the wrestling page. If you think of anything else, do come back to keep us updated - and do tell us if you find the book! People in suspended animation dreaming they're in a war sounds a strong concept, for sure, and a bit ahead of its time.

What they couldn't know was that the extension would last forever. Century after century, war after war, Hawker and his comrades were resurrected over and over to fight on alien planets with ever more advanced weapons. The reasons for the wars were incomprehensible, but that didn't matter. All that counted was the fighting itself. From incarnation through incarnation, one goal remained in Hawker's mind. Somewhere, somehow, there had to be a way out of the loop. And he was determined to find it. That does seem a good possibility, yes - one can sample the first 50% as an ebook at Smashwords. I see, with the original short story from 1974 it was based on, "But As a Soldier, For His Country" available free here. 1980 was when the full novel appeared, so that seems about right, time-wise...
