I remember liking the Tom Swift Jr. series from the 60s.
Currently reading The Big Burn by Timothy Egan about the Bitterroot Mountain fire of 1910 that burned a huge chunk of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. It is considered the worst natural disaster the country has ever faced, and is about the fledgling corps of the forestry service that faced the fire with insufficient equipment and insufficient men because the conservative members of congress kept cutting their funds.
